Sisterhood

This is probably the most personal post I’ve written.

Society (even families) feeds on pitting women against one another, primarily because it’s easy to and we let them. I’ve been there too… in college where boys outnumbered girls by 8:1, after being elected as the first female president in the 13 years of a club, it was most difficult for me to earn the trust of other female core-team members. They refused to support me as they thought “why not me?” It was heartbreaking to experience friends/sisters I thought I could count on be the first people to turn their backs when stakes got high.

I struggle with underconfidence as well and know the urge to one-up another female co-worker or the need for validation. And I can’t help but wonder if we have ourselves inhibited each other in some way?

If we, as women can understand our own feelings, choose to resist THAT urge, and stand together to promote each other, society won’t stand a chance. Our voices for each other make a difference.

Fixing this will take decades of work, mindset, and systemic changes. But if each of us can make a conscious decision to overcome our insecurities to put sisterhood first, this world can be a different place for future generations.
